Sounds like a plan to me, that what I would do if I would be in your place, test out the new softshell and bring just in case the good ol` hard shell.

in addition a face mask is mandatory, otherwise you might find yourself in an awkward situation that the same smile that you had when board the ski lift will remain with you the whole day.

Many thanks for all your comments. Referring to Marmot’s explanations about Softshell-Technologies (that you linked before) my jacket is “M1”. I guess I will have to give it a try. I will carry my old hardshell too, just in case.

if you are on the mountain and it is 10 degrees F with the wind blowing and the Wind Chill feels like -10 degress F this Jacket will NOT be enough

With out getting into specifics of brand A or B, what you need is a layer system, so your shell should be water & wind restiance, than you need a fleece insulation that usually zips inside the outer shell, than you need either a soft shell fleece jacket or some ski performance shirt and than you will need a thermo wear to allow your skin to avoid sweet moisture and to dry out.

Again what you want is ski clothes that will provide you with many options...every morning listen to the weather report on TV, Summit Daily (free newspaper) or the Hotel will have the latest faxed info from the resort itself. Based on that day`s weather you will decide how to dress. Predicting the weather in the Rockies is very tricky. It can be sunny in Breckenridge while dumping snow in Keystone (10 miles away). So same day reports are the most accurate. I can tell you how mant times the weather prediction was wrong the day before.

I do not want to scare you the weather may be great and even if it is below freezing when the sun comes out it will feels like spring and you may only choose to wear a fleece jacket, but that can change very quickly so you need to be prepared and have all the options.

as for one actually skied in Breckenridge I can tell you to wear layers of clothing. There can be big differences between the weather you will find at the base of the resort, to the weather you will find on top of the mountain.

and not to mention that the weather can change on the spot...it may feel sunny and warm one second and freezing hell (oximoron) the next.

There are plenty of lockers all over Breck, so you can easily shed a few layers if you need to..

I usually wear thermo underware (so sexy!!!!)
a performance long t- shirt
Softshell parkas with detachable fleece coat.
Turtle Fur Balaclava (very important)

other important things

Camel back - for water
goggles - do not just bring sunglasses - trust me!!!!
